Southern Living

Southerners have a way of greeting you at the front door with a cool drink in bare feet that says everything about relaxed hospitality.

This couple is just like that.

So when it came to redecorating this large, formal house the new look was all about “lighthearted and welcoming.” Whether for entertaining or simple relaxed evenings together, it should be comfortable, inviting, a place to relax and linger.

A favorite painting of impressionist white roses became the centerpiece of the living room and the new color scheme: white damask, Chinoiserie printed linen, aqua blue silks to follow the existing curtains ... and one large antique Asian screen to adorn the wall over the black piano. Elegant, but not fussy.

Plain white walls were glazed to give depth to the architecture. “Faux” wood paneling created definition for the bar area and ceiling recess, tying both into the grand woodwork of the fireplace wall. The same wall treatment around the upstairs sitting room added added character and coziness.

The dining room became a forest of gingko trees (her favorite) thanks to artist Michael McDonald. Metal leaf on the ceiling reflects the glowing chandelier above the dinner guests. It’s a home for relaxed, gracious living.
